Hair Shedding vs. Hair Loss: What’s the Difference?
Understanding shedding, thinning, scalp health, and when to see a dermatologist.
This article is educational and does not replace a medical visit. For diagnosis or treatment, schedule an appointment with a board-certified dermatologist.
Shedding and thinning are different
Hair shedding often means more hairs are falling out than usual. Hair loss or thinning may mean density is decreasing over time, the part is widening, the temples are changing, or the scalp is becoming more visible.
Common causes
Hair concerns may be related to genetics, hormonal changes, stress, illness, nutritional factors, medications, autoimmune disease, scalp inflammation, or recent surgery or medical treatment.
Evaluation matters
A dermatology evaluation may include scalp examination, hair-pull testing, review of medications and health history, lab work, and sometimes biopsy. The goal is to understand the pattern before choosing treatment.
Treatment possibilities
Options may include topical treatments, oral medications, injections, scalp care, platelet-rich plasma discussion, nutritional optimization, or treatment of scalp inflammation. Not every option is appropriate for every patient.
Why early care helps
The earlier the cause is identified, the more opportunities there may be to stabilize shedding, protect remaining hair, and support regrowth where possible.
