How Often Should You Get a Skin Check?

A practical guide to routine skin exams, mole monitoring, and when to schedule a dermatology visit sooner.

This article is educational and does not replace a medical visit. For diagnosis or treatment, schedule an appointment with a board-certified dermatologist.

Why skin checks matter

Routine skin exams help identify changing moles, precancerous growths, and skin cancers at an earlier stage. A full-body skin exam is also an opportunity to talk through sun exposure, sunscreen habits, family history, and any spot that looks or feels different.

How often to come in

Many adults benefit from a yearly skin check, especially if they have a history of significant sun exposure, tanning bed use, blistering sunburns, many moles, atypical moles, or a personal or family history of skin cancer. Some patients need more frequent visits based on their risk factors and prior biopsy results.

When to schedule sooner

Schedule an appointment sooner if a spot is new, changing, bleeding, painful, itchy, not healing, darkening, or noticeably different from your other moles. The ABCDE framework can help: asymmetry, border irregularity, color variation, diameter, and evolution.

What to expect

A skin check is performed with privacy and care. You can point out specific concerns, and your dermatologist may use magnification, photography, biopsy, or follow-up monitoring depending on the finding.

A mindful approach

Skin cancer prevention is not about fear. It is about knowing your skin, protecting it, and getting expert guidance when something changes.
